One Step at a Time

One Step at a Time is a therapeutic equine riding program for persons with special needs. Our mission is to empower those with special needs and promote unique relationships with people and animals. OSAT is an all-volunteer driven organization located in Furlong, PA at Sugar Bottom Farm.

Why riding?
Therapeutic riding is widely recognized as one of the most beneficial forms of therapy for those with disabilities. Horseback riding strengthens and relaxes muscles, improves posture, balance, coordination, circulation and respiration and increases joint mobility. Horseback riding also builds self-esteem, self-confidence and self-awareness. We have seen these benefits carry over into other parts of their daily lives such as school, therapy sessions and social groups.

Our program...
The small size of our program enables the therapy sessions to be exceptionally productive and extremely personal. Each student’s therapy session is individually scheduled, professionally and personally evaluated and implemented. Our horses are specifically chosen for their mental and physical soundness. They are trained and schooled regularly for the purpose of providing therapeutic services to those with disabilities. We are very proud to have two horses that have been awarded “Best Therapeutic Horse” for the years 2002 and 2005 by the Handicapped Riders Event (HRE).

Our riders...

The very special riders who participate in our program come from a wide range of situations, ages and backgrounds. Disabilities include mental retardation, Down Syndrome, blindness or visual impairment, deafness or auditory impairment, learning disability, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, post-polio, spina bifida, social/emotional disorders, autism, pervasive development disorder and attention deficit hyperactive disorder. Our Adult Head Trauma program helps people who have suffered traumatic head injury.

The one thing all of our riders have in common is determination and we are proud and honored to be able to provide this therapy service to them. One of our very special projects is our training for the Bucks County Special Olympic Equestrian Team and participation each year in the Special Olympics.

OSAT is an all- volunteer non-profit organization and a registered 501©(3) program.
